Louis Kern, born in Chicago and raised on a farm in Iowa, is now based in Oakland, Calif. As a furniture maker and master stair builder, specializing in grand and storybook spiral staircases, Kern was drawn to the San Francisco area because of all the Victorian homes & their tradition of grand woodwork. A decorated U.S. Marine, he saw combat in Vietnam as a radio operator & team leader. Lou Kern is a decorated Marine combat veteran and a master stair builder and furniture maker. His work has been featured in many books & publications including Fine Woodworking Magazine. He estimates that he has close to 100,000 hours in at his craft. Lou is currently working on furniture projects, as well as a documentary about the Spirit of Mastery.
